Martha Graham at 90
When one imagines Martha Graham, fleeting flighting figures of young Martha Graham were the first pictures that come into one’s mind. Like the form of dance she choreographed and changed over her long career, Martha was vivant, soaring, ephemeral. However, the above picture for New York Times was taken by Jim Wilson few months before her death and sadly, it does not show the energy or the youth that defined her life and career. Martha Graham was surrounded by her airborne company, as they rehearse “Maple Leaf Rag” for the first time on Sept. 7, 1990. Aging and frail, this once-energetic artisan won’t see the day when her students formed a dance company in her name, which happened in 1995.
